Giant Bear-S/T- Somewhere on the cusp of Alt Country, Bar Band Rock and a bit of experimentation lies the Giant Bear. Not easily categorized, this CD will appeal to fans of many types of music. I mean, come on, I know you dont have a country rock version of Nine Inch Nails "Head Like A Hole"! Buy this and your collection could boast one! 9.99

Makeshift 5 Fifth in a long line of great compilations, Makeshift, Memphis indie consortium, throws togethers bands from all over the map stylistically. Folks like Black Sunday, Brad Postlewaite, Dragoon round out another great comp! 11.99

The Goldwax Story Volume 1-CD- Although it generally gets lost in the shadows of Stax and even Hi, Goldwax in many ways was Memphis' premier soul label. Although they didnt have nearly as many releases as the two giants, most of the label's output was top-shelf. Boasting names like James Carr, The ovations, Spencer Wiggins, Barabra Perry, Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, Dorothy Williams, Eddie Jefferson and others, it was the soul afficianado's label. This comp has 24 of their greatest sides. (Be sure and pick up volume 2 as well!) 20.99

The Goldwax Story Volume 2-CD- Second volume of sublime Memphis soul, both volumes are essential! 20.99

Harlan T Bobo-I'm Your Man Easily one of the most anticipated follow ups in Memphis music history in the last decade! Once again, Harlan, in his follow up to the sublime "Too Much Love"(just scroll down to pick up a copy of this!)brings to the table tales of love, hate, heartbreak and hope. Top shelf songwriting, ecclectic instrumentation and vibe that is simulateously unsettling and comforting. Again, Harlan makes one of the best albums of the year. 12.99

Harlan T Bobo -Too Much Love-The debut album. Our first glimpse into Harlan's musical world, and this first glimpse is nothing short of amazing. Songs of this caliber havent been written in this city for years, or even decades. Easily the best singer songwriter this city or country has seen in too long a time. Essential 12.99

Jack O & The Tennessee Tearjerkers -The Flipside Kid-LP Jack puts another winner out! One of favorite new releases. Twisted Soul, Spaghetti Western weirdness and more heartbreaking tunes. Great! Recommended Highly! Jack took it upon himself to crank this vinyl out, he even silk screens the covers himself! A fine, handcrafted Memphis Rock n Roll record! Act fast, because we only have them when Jack himself saunters into the shop with a handful at a time!
$12.99

Jay Reatard -I Know a Place 7"- What can we say about Jay that hasnt already been said, possibly a lot, but you know the score when you buy one of his records. But this one is a little different. It is his (gulp) acoustic outing for Goner Records. He gets mighty poppy, a vibe that was alluded to on his latest LP, "Blood Visions" and taken to the fore with this 7" single. One side even features a Go-Betweens cover. 4.99

Oscars- A Whore Can Get a Job Anywhere-7" Single Memphis' favorite off-kilter combo. I dont think anyone knows what these dudes are thinking at any given time. Their records are something to behold however. I don't think I will write any more about it, well, because words cant do justice to the racket these guys spit out. 4.99

James Luther Dickison-Dixie Fried- Finally available as a domestic CD, Mr. Dickison's classic white-boy blues opus is once again ready to be fawned over. You have heard a bazillion imitators, but now you can check out the original real-deal for yourself(at a reasonable price!) 13.99
We also have a still sealed original pressing LP for sale at our shop! Hit us with an email for availablilty.

MOLOCH-S/T Produced by Don Nix (widely credited as a key architect of the "Memphis Sound"), this hard-hitting collection of bluesy acid rock first appeared on Stax subsidiary Enterprise in 1970. Featuring the outstanding guitar playing of the late Lee Baker (later to play with Alex Chilton) and the original version of "Going Down" (covered by Freddie King, Jeff Beck, JJ Cale and others), the album makes its CD debut here, complete with two rare bonus tracks, and is an essential purchase for all fans of blues-influenced rock and roll. 17.99

Terry Manning-Home Sweet Home- Featuring the recording debut of Big Star's Chris Bell, this outrageously enjoyable blend of psychedelic rock, Memphis soul and dirty R&B kicks off with one of the most audacious and successful Beatles covers ever. Terry Manning was a key figure in '60s Memphis music-making -- from his experience at Stax (learning from the likes of Isaac Hayes, Ike & Tina Turner, Willie Mitchell, Booker T. Jones, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Otis Redding, The Boxtops, Percy Sledge, The Staple Singers, Mississippi John Hurt, etc.) he became the Ardent Studios engineer/producer, and co-owner of the Ardent Records label that released the Big Star albums. Originally released on Stax's Enterprise label, this record is Manning's only solo work (he engineered, produced, and played almost all of the instruments) and features a feast of fuzz guitar, sweet vocals and funky rhythms that makes its long overdue CD debut here (complete with full liner notes and three bonus tracks), Home Sweet Home is a tongue-in-cheek blast from start to finish, and guaranteed to thrill fans. 17.99

Various Artists-STAX 50th Anniversary Celebration-A 2 CD set of 50 of Stax's greatest hits! Everything from instrumental hits like the Mar Keys' massive "Last Night", to deep soul ballads like William Bell's extraordinary "You don't Miss Your Water", sought after soul classics like Linda Lydell's "What a Man", deep funk like Rufus Thomas' "Funky Chicken" and many many more! A great place to start if you are starting a soul collection!
$19.99

The Faves-I-One half of Oxford, Mississippi garage legends The Neckbones. Forrest Hewes on drums and vocals and Dave Boyer everything else. Really good, clever power pop with more hooks than your grand pop's tackle box!
$9.99

Vending Machine -King Cobras Do-CD The long awaited new album is finally here! Memphis' best twisted pop band (made up mostly of vocalist/multi instrumentalist Robby Grant) with help from all sorts of folks (including a couple folks from the Shangri-La Family!) Great stuff, you need it!
$10.99

Chris Bell -I Am The Cosmos-LP A long time coming for this one! Until now, the only solo Chris Bell vinyl one could have was the I am the Cosmos/You and Your sister 45 on Car records, which was a tough one to get your paws on. But, the 4 Men with Beards guys have made available, the Rykodisc posthumous LP by Mr. Bell, I Am the Cosmos, available on 180 gram vinyl. Sounds amazing! if you havent heard this album before, dont hesitate any longer! Sublime, epic pop from the Big Star songwriter/guitarist. Essential!
$18.99

Big Star -3rd-LP The long out of print "lost" Big Star LP is now available once again! Made available in many different forms since its original 70's issue on Ardent Records, this masterpiece of brooding, slightly twisted pop is made available again from 4 Men with Beards. It features the original Artwork (much different than the more common 1978 PVC press) and the original track sequence and mix. The way it is supposed to be heard. You need this!
$18.99

The Sweet and Innocent -Cry Love Picture Sleeve-45 An excellent and rare Memphis 45 made available again by our good friend to the north, Mr. Tony Janda! Although most 45s re-issued these days are of the greasy chicken funky drumbreak variety, this one is a stunning soul ballad. The flip, "I Dont Know what Youre Full Of" defies classification. Acoustic guitar, bell set and a strong pop vibe predominate. Its soul, its folk, its rock, its great! It is an amazing record and finding an original copy of it is going to be a tough job. We are proud to present a limited edition Picture Sleeve version of this great reissue. We only have about a dozen of them or so, so act fast!
$9.99

Lucero-Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers-CD A new one from the critically acclaimed Lucero! This probably their most accomplished effort yet! More of what you've come to expect from this great band, just taken up a notch. Produced by Camper Van Beethoven's very own David Lowery!
$14.99

Jack O & The Tennessee Tearjerkers -The Flipside Kid-CD Jack puts another winner out! One of favorite new releases. Twisted Soul, Spaghetti Western weirdness and more heartbreaking tunes. Great! Recommended Highly! Stay tuned for a vinyl release.
$14.99

For Her and the Snow -Hot Girl in the Limo-CD New release from our founder's label, Shangri-La Projects! A group spearheaded by Texan Joe Presti and featuring an all-star Memphis band(Steve Selvidge, Doug Easley, Paul Buchignani among others). Plaintive, catchy songs by the boatload. Grab a copy for yourself and someone you love.
$10.99

The Coach and Four-The Great Escape-CD A new one from The Coach and Four! Lots o' guitars on this one! A sound that simultaneously conjures up the classic (late 80s) era Sonic Youth, the songwriting of past UK legends such as Echo and the Bunnymen with some 90s indie rock aesthetic thrown in for good measure. If you like swirling guitars and sound coming at you from all directions, this CD is for you! On Memphis' own Makeshift records, of course.
$9.99

Esque-Everyone's Playing-CD They want you to know it is pronounced "Esk". Anywho, remember those clangy bass rockers recorded in Manchester, UK for Factory Records when the 70s became the 80s? Well, this is that stuff, except it was recorded over by the Mrs. Winnner's Fried Chicken restaurant on Union here in Memphis. Yowza!
$6.99

River City Tanlines-I'm Your Negative-CD River City Tanlines' newest tunes. They are gettin' a tougher on this one on Dirtnap. Bubba And T-Money get it all wrapped up tighter, the guitar is gettin louder. Good stuff. 11 tunes from one of Memphis' premier punk n' roll three pieces. Ya dont need anymore folks than that, ya know?
$14.99

River City Tanlines-I'm Your Negative-LP Black and shiny large sized vinyl version of the small silver and shiny plastic version. Caution, this will not fit in your CD player, no matter how many times you try and cram it in there.
$11.99

William Lee Ellis-God's Tattoos-CD Music writer turned music maker returns with another album full of influence, inspiration and perspiration. Produced by Jim Dickinson, it has all the flavors you would expect from a Southern gentleman and his guitar. A little bit Blues and a little bit Rhumba. Yes, you read that right.
$12.99

The Grifters-The Doink Years-CD Sometime when the 80s became 90s, before messy hair and cardigans, before smelling the teen spirit, four average joes from Memphis created a racket and recorded said racket themselves. Out of necessity, they accidently took part, via a homemade rumble, in what would become known as "lo-fi" or "indie rock". One of the few real deals. Not to be confused with the insipid wimpy rock music about "feelings". Anyway, this stuff is best described by the music itself. 8 classic, long out of print tunes from their Doink! records era originally only released on vinyl.
$8.99

Shangri-La Projects-B-Sides-CD Out of the vaults of Shangri-La projects comes 8 long out of print tunes originally on vinyl and now on a nice shiny compact disc. You get gems and nuggets from The Grifters, Simple Ones, The Hot Monkey, Doug Easley Experience, and Citizens Utilities. Plus these tunes were originally on 7", which meant getting up every two minutes to flip it over. Now you can relax in your favorite bean bag and listen to them from beginning to end and not have to get up. $8.99

Snowglobe -Oxytocin CD
Fans of Snowglobe's unique brand of psychedelic folk pop should probably consider "Oxytocin" a Brad Postlethwaite solo record, although 3 of the 4 members of the band appear here. Alas, Tim Regan does not feature here, but this is still a fine effort, and maybe the best sounding "Snowglobe" record yet. The Memphis Flyer did a nice write-up if ya want some particulars on the line-up and the band's precarious future. Let's hope they stick around!
CD, $12.99

Holly-Fearless and Free-CD
Holly, aka Holly Cole, is a songstress with a sound that isnt from around these parts. An epic flowing sound that may remind you of the expansive West Texas soundscapes of say, Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Lovely acoustic strumming, songs and singing with an undercurrent of atmospheric twangs and echos of saws and other almost undecipherable sounds. Easily one of the most mature and accomplished outings for the local Makeshift label.
$8.99

Paul Taylor -Open Closed-CD
Memphis' Makeshift Records, the city's most prolific indie rock consortium produces another midtown classic. Features guest appearances by David brookings and Amy Levere $12.99
