The Goldwax Story Volume 1-CD- Although it generally gets lost in the shadows of Stax and even Hi, Goldwax in many ways was Memphis' premier soul label. Although they didnt have nearly as many releases as the two giants, most of the label's output was top-shelf. Boasting names like James Carr, The ovations, Spencer Wiggins, Barabra Perry, Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, Dorothy Williams, Eddie Jefferson and others, it was the soul afficianado's label. Jay Reatard -I Know a Place 7"- What can we say about Jay that hasnt already been said, possibly a lot, but you know the score when you buy one of his records. But this one is a little different. It is his (gulp) acoustic outing for Goner Records. He gets mighty poppy, a vibe that was alluded to on his latest LP, "Blood Visions" and taken to the fore with this 7" single. Oscars- A Whore Can Get a Job Anywhere-7" Single Memphis' favorite off-kilter combo. I dont think anyone knows what these dudes are thinking at any given time. MOLOCH-S/T Produced by Don Nix (widely credited as a key architect of the "Memphis Sound"), this hard-hitting collection of bluesy acid rock first appeared on Stax subsidiary Enterprise in 1970. Featuring the outstanding guitar playing of the late Lee Baker (later to play with Alex Chilton) and the original version of "Going Down" (covered by Freddie King, Jeff Beck, JJ Cale and others), the album makes its CD debut here, complete with two rare bonus tracks, and is an essential purchase for all fans of blues-influenced rock and roll. 17.99 |

Terry Manning-Home Sweet Home- Featuring the recording debut of Big Star's Chris Bell, this outrageously enjoyable blend of psychedelic rock, Memphis soul and dirty R&B kicks off with one of the most audacious and successful Beatles covers ever. Terry Manning was a key figure in '60s Memphis music-making -- from his experience at Stax (learning from the likes of Isaac Hayes, Ike & Tina Turner, Willie Mitchell, Booker T. Jones, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Otis Redding, The Boxtops, Percy Sledge, The Staple Singers, Mississippi John Hurt, etc.) he became the Ardent Studios engineer/producer, and co-owner of the Ardent Records label that released the Big Star albums. Originally released on Stax's Enterprise label, this record is Manning's only solo work (he engineered, produced, and played almost all of the instruments) and features a feast of fuzz guitar, sweet vocals and funky rhythms that makes its long overdue CD debut here (complete with full liner notes and three bonus tracks), Home Sweet Home is a tongue-in-cheek blast from start to finish, and guaranteed to thrill fans. 17.99 |

Until now, the only solo Chris Bell vinyl one could have was the I am the Cosmos/You and Your sister 45 on Car records, which was a tough one to get your paws on. But, the 4 Men with Beards guys have made available, the Rykodisc posthumous LP by Mr. Bell, I Am the Cosmos, available on 180 gram vinyl. The Sweet and Innocent -Cry Love Picture Sleeve-45 An excellent and rare Memphis 45 made available again by our good friend to the north, Mr. Tony Janda! Although most 45s re-issued these days are of the greasy chicken funky drumbreak variety, this one is a stunning soul ballad. The flip, "I Dont Know what Youre Full Of" defies classification. Acoustic guitar, bell set and a strong pop vibe predominate. Its soul, its folk, its rock, its great! It is an amazing record and finding an original copy of it is going to be a tough job. The Grifters-The
Doink Years-CD Sometime when the 80s became 90s,
before messy hair and cardigans, before smelling the teen spirit,
four average joes from Memphis created a racket and recorded said
racket themselves. Out of necessity, they accidently took part,
via a homemade rumble, in what would become known as "lo-fi"
or "indie rock". One of the few real deals. Not to be
confused with the insipid wimpy rock music about "feelings".
Anyway, this stuff is best described by the music itself. 8 classic,
long out of print tunes from their Doink! records era originally
only released on vinyl.

Utilities. Plus these tunes were originally on 7", which meant
getting up every two minutes to flip it over. Now you can relax in

Snowglobe
-Oxytocin CD
Fans
of Snowglobe's unique brand of psychedelic folk pop should probably
consider "Oxytocin" a Brad Postlethwaite solo record, although
3 of the 4 members of the band appear here. Alas, Tim Regan does not
feature here, but this is still a fine effort, and maybe the best
sounding "Snowglobe" record yet. The Memphis Flyer did a nice write-up if ya want some particulars on the line-up
and the band's precarious future. Let's hope they stick around!

Holly-Fearless
and Free-CD
Holly, aka Holly Cole, is a songstress with a sound
that isnt from around these parts. An epic flowing sound that may
remind you of the expansive West Texas soundscapes of say, Jimmie
Dale Gilmore. Lovely acoustic strumming, songs and singing with an
undercurrent of atmospheric twangs and echos of saws and other almost
undecipherable sounds. Easily one of the most mature and accomplished
outings for the local Makeshift label.
